1999 Z28 Traction Control Prob!!??
If you were to hold the ASR switch down as you start the engine, it should turn your ASR off, whether you let go of the switch after the engine starts or not. So if you want to do it a real cheap way and save 72 bucks, tape the switch down, velcro it, wedge it with a toothpick, stick it down with chewing gum, whatever.
B/c I don't like driving with traction control on. It almost got me killed one time b/c the car hit a slick spot and I could not control the car b/c the traction control was fighting against me. I got to the button just in time to get the car back under control. I was not in my z28 though. But after that experience I just don't like T/C. I'd rather just not have it. SS's don't have it. And plus I'm afraid that if I leave it on all the time I'll forget to turn it off when I want to have a little fun Lol!
I turn mine off as a force of habit now too. The traction control in my old Z almost got me in serious trouble once. My work is on a highway, and during rush hour traffic you have to jump into a break when you can. The road was slightly rainy, and the damn t.c. kicked in just as I was out on the road and trying to accelerate away from the galloping herd. Nothing worse than jumping out in traffic and literally hitting the brakes.

As the saying goes, "if you make something idiot proof, someone will build a better idiot".
Sometimes I'd rather make the mistakes myself, it could be easier to correct. And I know to expect the unexpected if pushing the car hard.
The only time I would, and do use t.c., is in snow.
Now ABS brakes, I think that's a benefit....most of the time.

I have had 2 trucks with TC one was not so bad and the other was an absolute pain in my tail. My 2006 Avalanche LT had TC that I could turn off and on. This TC was over powering and was for total idiots driving. When I would get the truck in a slide (usually on purpose) the TC would kick in and it would over correct and sent me into the oncomming traffic. If I didnt counter steer the TC would keep me completely under control and just fine. Turn it off and I could drift all day no issues.
My 2004 Avy had TC as well but there was no shut off for it. That TC would not assist me unless I was really out of shape and then it worked with me instead of against me. I liked that system because I could drift the truck and it would not care but if I hit some ice or oil (which I hit both at one time or another) the truck would wait till its tail got too far around for counter steering and then apply the brakes to what ever wheel was needed to bring it back around. I liked that system. I have not had much time behind the wheel of my Wife's car to get a feel for the TC on her car but I know it will not let me do a doughnut in a parking lot when it is enguaged.

^^^^ what you all said, thats why the traction is off, it kicks in when it wants to and when you need the power!!!
best traction control i had was on my BMW 323i, it progressively can on and limited power etc so it wasn't like just hitting the brakes as camaro69 said
