Your car already has a Y pipe, that is the pipe that connects the head or header pipes from each side of the engine into a single exhaust pipe. X and H pipes are used with a full dual exhaust to connect the two exhaust pipes toghether at some piont near the middle of the run. The letters "X" & "H" indicate how that connection looks. The idea is to equalize ehaust pulses and get some extra scavenging action. As to which one makes more power, I have no clue.

I had headers into glasspacks/straight pipes on my 86 z it had a 400 small block in it and it sounded awesome.

i wasted my money on a flowmaster 80 series muffler with stainless tips...got charged $500 from meineke (ripoff!!). it sounds fairly nice, no idea how much power i gained though. about a month ago i got an exhaust cutout and ive had open exhaust ever since. it sounds awsome, and im just too lazy to put the cap on it. id say go for some hooker competition headers and then a hooker cat back with 3" pipe.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with the hooker headers, For like $150 it's a good deal.

Default H Pipes And X Pipes Explained

The difference mainly in X and H Pipes is at the pulse and equalization of the flow at different RPMs. H-Pipes scavenges exhaust gases best at low-to-mid rpm ranges to increase the horsepower. Whereas X- pipes are pulse free, and have a more equal and synchronized flow that increases your horsepower regardless of RPM's. So Theoretically X-pipes are probably better.

Here's what I'd go for... a substantiable amount of horsepower at a reasonable price. Let's face it Not everyone has a grand to dump into an exhaust alone. You can get a set of Hooker Competition Headers for $150, a Universal Jeg's Brand X-pipe for $79-99 depends on your exhaust size. or Hedman makes a nicer X pipe with what they call an X-treme Equalizer for $166.99. then finish it off with A Hooker dual inlet and outlet Aero chamber Muffler for about 60 bucks. These look like some excellent mufflers I've included a pic and specs for these I like how they call them the REAL "MASTERS of FLOW" ( I dislike the quality of flowmasters)
And to add a "bling" (haha have to be a smartass.) Anyways, add a set of Hookers Dual exaust tips. for 29.99 a piece which will be quad tips

And there ya go a full exhaust system with good quality parts for $436 bucks! (Includes Everything in Bold)

Or go for the jeg's x pipe instead of the Hedman X and you've got it for $300! (excluding the tips)
