Performance Question
Alright...so, I have a 76 Camaro with a 350 and 4bbl. I am wondering what kind of upgrades I could get as far as cam, intake, and carb (or anything else). If anyone knows any good setups and what kind of gains I could be expecting it would be awesome if you could leave them here. I drive the car practically every day and I am interested in upgrading it but I dont know what I want to do or even where to start really because I am still learning...well, thanks!
when chosing what you want to do, you have to base it on how you will be using it. theres a lot of parts out there you can get, but along wiht them comes an effective power band where the motor will make the most power. but you dont want to mix up anything for top end with stuff made for bottom end, or youll end up with a car thats slow, and not fun to drive. first of all what will you be doing with the car. if its an everyday driver, i would keep the parts more towards the bottom end. if you want a car thats decently friendly on the streets but you can help your ET's, look into a power band more in the middle. you said you drive it almost everyday, so stay away from the top end.
heres what i think would work best with your motor
-start it off with a holley street dominator dual plane. JEGS part number 510-300-36
-then stick a holley double pumper 650 cfm carb, JEGS part number 510-O-4777C
-Then grab a Lunati hydraulic cam and lifter kit. the best one i could find for your application is JEGS part number 638-60101LK
-When you change your cam, its smart to get new timing sprockets and chain. JEGS part number 270-11984-1
-Along with that move up the valvetrain. grab comp cams pushrods, play it safe with stock length, JEGS part number 249-7372-16
-i would also grab comp cams magnum rockers, JEGS part number 249-1412-16, they have roller tips to cut down friction and free up some power.
- i would replace the valve springs with comp cams single springs, JEGS part number 249-940-16.
*along with valve springs make your you get new valve seals too, they are cheap.
-as for exhaust, i recommend headmans painted long tube headers, with 1 5/8" primary tubes, JEGS part number 500-65104
-the gaskets they come with are junk so get these aluminum gaskets, JEGS part number 760-66011.
-Finnaly, have the exhaust done with true dual 2.5 inch with an x-pipe, and for mufflers, i strongly recommend Moroso's spiral flow mufflers, JEGS part number 71094050. I also have a 1976 chevy 350 and i have true dual 2.5 inch exhaust with moroso spiral flows, and it is the best muffler i have ever owned. they are not obnoxious what so ever, but give you a badass sound that you will love. not to mention they dont restrict the motor at all.
I hope i have helped. this combonation of parts will give you a torque monster thats very streetable. with this setup, ocming form a stock chevy 350 pushing around 280 horsepower and 320 ft lbs of torque, will get you to around 320-340 horsepower and 370-390ft lbs of torque. good luck.
Hope i can be of help, that part list above will give you one powerful but street friendly machine. oh yea and if the motor has over 80,000 miles, i would look into having it bored before doing any serious upgrades.
