Default Exhaust for an 81 Zed

What do you recommend?

I was thinking flowmaster super 44s? Are they too much for the piece of **** 350 in the 81z?

Would I need headers too?

I don't know much.

what exactly are you trying to do?
do you want power, sound, just replacements?

not many of us around here really like flowmaster, but I have used them before, they sound fine. if you are going to get headers then just replace everything, dont worry about welding in mufflers into the stock exhaust. headers will need a larger exhaust than stock.

also, I apologize for not seeing this earlier. for some reason the "new posts" thing is acting up. and we dont have a ton of 2nd gen guys so I will move this into the "exhaust" area, because the questions you are asking arent necessarily 2nd gen specific even though this happens to be the application. you will get more hits there.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I guess I'm looking for both power and sound. The '81 350 has only like 190hp so any performance I can get without screwing with the gas mileage would be great.

Everyone I'm talking to is telling me flowmaster sounds great and gives the most HP. My dad has Thrush and they sound good, but I'm looking for something loud and deep, but not too loud.

Would I need headers? I'm told the Hooker headers + flowmaster is a good combo. What benefit would It give over just mufflers and left everything else stock.

I'm a nooooob!

Search Youtube there are a lot of videos of different combination of headers and exhaust. As long as you stick with name brand stuff I don't think you will see much differents in HP or mileage you will hear a differents in sound.

What I mean to say is any header and aftermarket performance base exhaust will do better then what you have. Upgrade the exhaust with out headers you will only see a small increase. Its the combo that sounds great and lets the car breath.

flowmaster is not the best for hp, its actually about the worst, but its pretty inexpensive so thats why people go for it and they DO sound good.
but just weld in mufflers wont do much for you performance wise, and you will not need headers. if you do choose to do headers though, you can get them as they will do much more for you in the power department than mufflers will

Okay, thanks all.

How much better will it sound with Headers + Mufflers vs just Mufflers. I don't want it to be obnoxiously loud, but also not sound like a rice burner.

Also, I would need to replace everything right? Nothing stock will work?

Also, what's the best site/retailer to order this stuff for Canadians? I really don't want to go to Canadian Tire.

Thanks for the help.

it wont sound like a rice burner no matter what you do.

it will get louder with headers, but you can always put a quieter muffler on to counteract it.

if just doing muffler for sound then dont worry about changing everything. if doing headers then yes, everything must go.

dunno, im not canadian
