Oil pressure rising when you rev the engine? I would get that checked, your car might blow up . J/k, that's perfectly normal.

First off, are you positive it's not getting fuel? You need to check that first. If it's not getting fuel, maybe the injectors are clogged. Trying running some injector cleaner through them. If it is getting fuel, the next cause could be spark. Try checking your distributor cap and see if there is a lot of build up on the inside of it or on the rotor. If that looks fine, maybe take your ignition module off and have it tested at a local auto store. Try all those things first.

Like everyone is saying, a basic tune-up goes a long ways.

 

I say its running lean. That means getting too much fuel.

Or it could be the other way, it needs more air.

I am a carb guy and dont know where to start with tuning an FI system.

Have you checked the injectors? Are the all in there at the same angle? That could throw alot of stuff off.

 

your gonna have to start with checkin the basics in order to proceed in finding the fix. do you have spark?? any of your buddies have a noid light(for testing injectors) theyre cheap and let you know if the computer is at least attatched to the injectors and or functioning. theres a million possibilities at this point and we need to start narrowing it down theres still mechanical as well, do you have good compression?? kurt

 

X2 with Kurt. Tune it up. Also, don't add anything till you figure out the current problem. You mentioned a new intake, I would wait on that till the problem is fixed.

Hellion. Running lean? I could be all wet on this but I dont see enough info to make that call. Besides he would have said something about a fuel smell or backfiring.just my $0.02

 

You need to make sure you are getting a good flow of fuel up to the engine. I recently bought a 91 that had been sitting for a while. I could hear the pump prime so figured the pump was fine. After disconnecting the fuel line at the injector unit, then turning the key on, the gas barely dribbled out. I had already changed the filter so I knew it wasn't that. Had to drop the tank, and what went bad was the rubber union between the pump and sending unit. It got all spongy and split apart, but stayed lined up enough to cause a very slight flow. Most of the gas was just pumping right out of the union and back into the tank Even though the pump was still good, I replaced it anyway since it was all apart.

 

Thanks for the replys. Hopefully I don't have to drop the tank, but it was a good suggestion. As for the intake...my stock one is cracked and not holding the filter properly so I have to replace it before doing any real driving further than around the block. I figured if I was going to replace it, I might as well upgrade it. I've checked ebay and they really have nothing for this gen of camaro as far as intake and exhaust goes. Thanks again.

I get it running and rev the motor and it does ok up to 2000rpm, but if I try to take it up to 2500-3000 she dies on the spot. Does that sound like running rich or lean. I don't smell a strong gas odor really, but who knows. I'm just going to pray its crappy gas that has sat in a tank for several months and a bad filter combined with gummed up injectors....

 

[&:] jordan you mention the manifold as being cracked, if thats the case and its into the intake tract this could be a huge air leak and cause all sorts of problems. you also mention that it holds a filter? would that be a fuel filter?? there are some aftermarket companies that make tuned port manifolds but the stock one is decent unless your gonna upgrade the motor to match the aftermarket manifolds characteristics. kurt

 

the air intake is craked....the part the holds the air filters inside. The driver side filter is basically out of its housing....so I need a new intake.

 

What? The plastic box is cracked? Is that what uoi are saying? If so just get a CAI or mkae on from some PVC pipe or exhaust tubing. Or just get rid of the box and attach a cone air filter to the tube.

And it definently sounds out of tune. [&o]

Any of your friends/friends dads a good mechanic? Have them take a look at it.

 

When you say intake we thing manifold; big, ugly, all kind of parts, nobody wants to change one metal thing. You are sort of correct in calling it intake, its just specificaly the air filter housing unit. Much easier to replace, but probably not causing your problem. Head on down to the local GM dealer and they should be able to get you a replacement. Or, like you were already thinking, upgrade toa cai.
Tune up's are fairly simple and can be done without needing to buy all kinds of exotic tools. Replace the oil and oil filter. Replace all the filters for that matter. New spark plugs and wires. If you have a distributor, replace the cap and rotor. There are more things to do but, I suggest buying a chiltons manual and get to it.
