unaccurate tachometer

Default unaccurate tachometer

i recently obtained my first car, a 91 rs camaro , the tach is wayyyyyyy messed up though, it says im doin 7000 when im really at 1500, i have checked all fuses and that so far hasn't helped, any advice would be greatly appreciated

You need a new tach cable, it probably got wet or something I can't tell you exactly but it's most likely broken. It runs from behind the gauge to the distributor your better off just getting a new one

Assuming your tach was not taken from a pre-80's corvette you do not have a tach cable.
It could be a bad ground or a loose connection. A electronic tach is a very simple device. All it does is counts how many times the coil fires. Its hooked to the negative side of the coil. It knows 4 fires equals 1 RPM. So something is wrong with the connection from the coil to the tach or the tach itself.

Opps in your case its 3 fires equals 1 RPM

How silly of me I didn't even remember its not a cable any more. Good call!

Your tachometer problem is very common among the 1990-92 Camaros. Even my 91 read double, I just compensated. The more people you talk to, and read about, will show you that a tach in these models that reads accurately, is a rarity. The issue is with a bad circuit board behind the tach in the dash cluster.
