lock up will reduce trans temps and increase fuel economy

i'm hoping it's the torque converter .under wot the car revs quick an doesn't pick up any speed like a clutch slipping in a manuel tranny car .
any thoughts ?

An automatic has a clutch pack that can slip when worn, just like a worn manual tranny clutch. Does it slip off the line, or when in passing gear, or both? Does it make a difference depending on what gear it's in?

more so from a roll but it still slips coming off the line

How many miles on the trans?
Start with the easy stuff first. Is your fluid at the proper level? Is your TV cable adjusted correctly: http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/tvcable.htm
Does the fluid on the dipstick smell/look burned? That would be a sign of the clutches possibly slipping. Could also be something wrong with the valve body. Have you checked for any error codes?
