Default tires

i have a 78 camaro .what size tire can i put under the rear without any rubbing issues.i have the stock rearend in it.the body is factory and has had no mods. to allow for bigger tires.i would like to put 295/50-15 under it .also what size rim will fit under the rear.with 50 i would like to put 10" rims on them.maybe put 60's mounted on 8" rims on the front.any help would be appreciated.

I have air shocks and 255/60r15's on 15x10 reverse offset cragars on the rear of my '79 Z. They rub if the air shocks get to low. If you can get the offset right a 15x10 rim fits good with a 265/60 maybe a 275/50 but that would be pushin it. I highly doubt you'll be able to get 295's under there without having to mod something. I've noticed that wide tires suck on anything other that dry pavement. As soon as I find factory Z wheels I'm wrappin them in some 235/65r15 rubbers and sayin bye bye to those ai shocks and the low traction tires they're protecting.

i have a 78 with 255/60/15 on 15x8 (85 model z28 wheels) no rub at all, no air shocks or anything, it will mainly depend on back space of the wheels you choose, if you figure out how to put on a 295 let me know. good luck

I measured mine once and I think I figured that a 3.5" to 3.75" backspace would fit a 15x10 perfectly. my reverse offsets I have now only have 1.5' to 2" backspace. I'm saying a 265 should fit and a 275 might fit. Keep in mind that the rear end moves from side to side in turns more than you may think. The three digit #(265) is the section width, the two digit #(60) is the aspect ratio, basicly the sidewall hieght. As for making it hook up, I think it's possible to go to wide as it is also possible to go to narrow. If you have an open diff, only one wheel spins you sideways, I suggest installing a limited slip or a locker. Thorsen and Auburn make very good limited slip units and Detroit makes the best lockers. The other key is wieght transfer, when you launch you want as much wieght transfered to the rear of the car as possible to help traction.

i sure would appreciate any info from anyone .any tips on how to make this car go straight.it has stock rearend with factory posi-trac and370 gears, traction bars the cheap ones.subframes are connected.tires are 205/14,i havent bought tires yet .these tires are just to make it a roller.also 245,265,275 and so on is the height not the width.75,70,60,50, and so on is the width not the height.a 255/60 is shorter than a 275/60

A 255/60 is shorter because its not as wide as the 275/60 compare it to a 275/40 or 45 and you'll find they are within a quarter to half an inch in overall height. the section width dictates the sidwall height hence the name aspect RATIO. on a 255/60 the sidewall hieght is 60% of the section(tread) width. I appologise if I failed to mention that I've been selling and installing tires for the last twelve years, and I work in a driveline shop solving problems like these.

How much of a budget are you on? aside from a set of drag radials the only other mod I can think of is a locker or a spool. Either of which is a few hundred anyway, the spool may be cheaper but the car won't like turns. I cant think of to many cheap ($300 or less) mods for improving traction.
