Default Tachometer redlines while at idle?

I'm new here and seems like a cool forum so far, my tach isnt working right and after I start it up it goes to redline, any suggestions? This is on a 91 camaro RS 305 with automatic trans.

Its the factory unit, I believe it has never been replaced.

im guessing that the tach is part of the factory gauge cluster in the dash? i am not sure if you can replace it, or if you have to replace the entire gauge cluster...it has to be soemthing with the tach itself...because i believe it is run off of the distributor, but i am not sure..my camaro had an aftermarket tach, run directly to the dist. i am not sure where, but i would suggest trying to find out where the wire is (on the dist or into the ECU) and see if you cant check the connection...it may just be that the tach is going bad..
