Default summer heat

i know this may seem like a stupid question, but would a colder thermostat help the engine in the summer? I live in nebraska so it can get kinda hot, and i dont like the thermostat waiting untill 210 sometimes almost 230 degrees to start cooling, that just seems too hot. And does a cold engine run better? Ive just been under that impression for quite some time. I was thinking a 180 degree thermostat would work well with nebraskas weather changes but my dad tells me im just wasteing time and money (im 16).
I just thought that for about 20 bucks this was something that would definatly be worth the money since high heat= the enemy.

To take advantage of the low temp stat, you need to get the fans to come on at a lower temperature, otherwise you will still be running hot in traffic.
