replacing alternator
I have an 89 Iroc with the 305, engine code F. I need to replace my alternator, and have already got the replacement part. After I disconnected the battery, I tried to take off the serp belt but I could not figure out exactly how to reduce the tension on the tensioner. I have read as many articles as I could find online on how to do this, but none seem to explain exactly how to reduce the tension on the belt in my particular engine. I will try to get a picture up of what I am looking at later today, but I assume some of you guys know this engine like the back of your hand and can take it appart blindfolded. Any help or guidance that you guys can give would be greatly appreciated! I just recently bought this car and I appreciate all the help I received when I asked questions on this forum before purchasing it. Thanks in advance for any responses!
The belt is held tight by a tensioner. You will see an idler pulley with a 1/2" square hole in the front of it. You need to snap a 1/2" drive breaker bar (or ratchet if you don't have a bar) into the square hole and pull it towards you, relieving the tension, then you can remove the belt from the alternator.
Thanks for the help Camaro. I am going to do the replacement tomorrow when I have more time(and daylight) to complete the job. I went and looked at it yesterday after reading your post and I think I have a better understanding of exactly what I need to do now. Thanks again for your imput.
