Default RE: rear gears

ORIGINAL: blackz87

One of the problems about gear ratio changes by people that don't know what they are about. My personal opinion is if its not broke don't mess with it. Also the gear ration change is not going to make a low powered car faster.
I have like 305 hp in my camaro so I wouldn't nessessarly call it low power and it did make it alot quicker. I talked to someother mechanics and they said it sounds like they just need to be broken in.
Thanks

I'm sorry guys, but, I do gearchanges and rebuilds for a living. I can tell you that if you do a gear swap and it makes any noise, it's not right. I have probably done more rearends than most of the members who post here and except for the three that I can remember they were wisper quiet when I did the initial break in. FYI on proper break in procedure, the rule is 4 heat cycles and no shock load. sustain operating temp for 20-30 mins, let it cool off completely, repeat 3 more times and your done. No shock load means, no poping the clutch, hard luanches/acceleration, nuetral drops ect. a note on Auburn positrac units: the fluid must be changed at about 500 miles after break in. They come packed in a special coating the helps the clutches break in, the coating washes off and thins out and contaminates the gear oil causing considerable noise in some cases, if the fluid is not changed. From what I gathered from the initial post ollie 2009, your gears were not set up properly. The idiot who did the work should have known not to use a ring gear spacer, you need to get the proper 3 series carrier and then get it set up properly before the gears are trashed.

Sorry, I've been too busy to keep up here. Ring gear spacers are never a good idea in my opinion, reason being, they cause the ring gear to not sit perfectly true to the carrier, due to manufacturing tolerances ( it will have a slight amount of runout ). Every ringear and carrier I mount, new set or old, gets worked with a facing stone before they are assembled. As for getting the right carrier check with your local drivetrain specialist they should carry Spicer products. Spicer makes everything.
