You bougth parts before understanding what was required for the install[sm=chairshot.gif] My only suggestion for you is do a search or find a shop that can give you some straigth answers. Your only present info is it is a 79 and nothing more[sm=badbadbad.gif] Can not give any reply due to lack of basic details.[sm=chairshot.gif]

You need to know wht the existing gear ratio is, as different gear sets will only fit certain types of carriers. A certain type carrier will only support certain gear sets.

the carrier is the hardware which holds the ring gear, distributes the power to one or both axles and holds them inside the housing. depending on what existing gears you have will identify what carrier you have. your best option is to pull the pan count the teeth on the ring and pinion gear and divide them together. get back with us when you find out. Ok I took it too my mechanic and he put it in he said he had to buy a spacer and something had to be changed with the shims. It took him forever to get done and I got charged alot. The gears are meshing and basically screaming. It's not too loud andthemechanic says they just need to wear in. I think he doesn't know what he is talking about and I think I will probally have to take it back after a while for him to fix it again. What do you guys think?

I think he needs to check his work. If he says its fine make sure he puts in writing your complaint and his determination that it is fine.

One of the problems about gear ratio changes by people that don't know what they are about. My personal opinion is if its not broke don't mess with it. Also the gear ration change is not going to make a low powered car faster.

They do take about 100 miles to break in. I could hear mine for about 100 miles before they quieted down. I would run it hard and then let them cool off. What brand did you get? Richmond ring and gear says drive it for 30 minutes let it cool and then run it again to break them in properly.

One thing he did not mention is if its a posi. A posi will whine a little even after a simple fluid change. But an open rear I have never had one whine after a complette rebuild.
