Default Rear gears

I have only this phone to access the Internet and it's hard to search. So what I need help with is, I found a posi rear out of a 98 fbody and I want to make sure it's 3:42 gear ratio, so how can I do this? I see a bunch of numbers on the ring gear? I heard something about turning the yoke and counting the revolutions? Thanks for the guidance.

for a posi rearend, you turn the driveshaft yoke until the wheel or axle makes one revolution. as you do this count the number of times the yoke is turned. if you have to turn it 3 1/4 times its 323, a little less than 3 1/2 times it would be 342.

That bunch of numbers on the ring gear are the gear ratio which is a lot more accurate then turning the yoke and counting.

The sure way to find out, in case that someone may have changed the gears, is to remove the rear cover and count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears. After doing that you will have to do some high level math (4th grade), such as long division, and divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. The result will be the gear ratio. Removing the rear cover will also give you the opportunity to inspect the innards, and give it a needed fluid change.

Another one....Just get the numbers off the ring gear. Count the turns...Count the gear teeth what BS.

RPO codes are useless if the gears have been changed, and not all gear sets are numbered, depends who made them. Or are you having problems counting, not enough fingers or toes, or doing 4th grade math?
