Default Rattle under the car

I have a 95 3.4l.an i noticed it a while back but it hasent really bothered me till other people started saying things to me about. but theres a rattle under the car. its really noticable when im in a drive through. i know its not from the engine. but i was wondering what it might be. an also my shifter also has alot of movement in it. ill be in 5th gear an the shifter is vibrating alot. i dont know if they have anything todo with each other but im wandering about both of them.

As far as the shifter goes you may have some bushings going out in the linkage, the only way to know is to get under the car and check. For your rattle, check the heat shield on the cat and make sure it isn't vibrating (note: don't grab the heat shield when the car is on, it will be hot...)

Thats pretty much all it could be, if it were something else you would have more problems with it.

Let me recant that. There could also be some debris in the cat. describe what it sounds like and if you could crawl under the car to see if you could pin-point where its comming from.

*DISCLAIMER* *SAFETY* if you crawl under a running car to see where a rattle is comming from - stay away from the round tubes, they are hot and will burn you. Make sure the car is in park and the e-brake engaged. Keep small children or anyone who likes to play pranks away from the running car while you are down there.

Check the heat shield on the Cat, it is a common source for the rattle. The welds have been know to break or rust.

Does it get worse when you turn the air conditioning on?
