ratchet noise in trans but only in 5th gear

Default ratchet noise in trans but only in 5th gear

k so i have a 95 3.4l with at 5 speed. itll drive fine in first through fourth but recently when im in fifth which is my overdrive gear i hear and feel this noise that sounds kinda like a ratchet turning.... any ideas of what this is????

A broken tooth on 5th gear.

ok so im guessin that means rebuild??? and is it ok to drive in that gear till i get the money to rebuild it???

Just hope the broken piece does not get jammed between two gears, as you can wind up wit a broken transmission case.

Don't use 5th gear. You are hoping the counter gear is not damaged. If it is you might find getting a used tranny is a lot cheaper. If your mechanic does not mind using used parts it may be ok.

You will know better once you get the cover off but cheapest way out might be a used tranny and have it gone thru with a bearing/sycro kit.

Normally the biggest problem is all the special tools you will need. Step one will be disassembley and inspection of all the parts to see whats wrong. The other critical thing is figuring out why something failed. You may have a failed 5th gear but it may have failed because of too much or not enough clearance some place. Automatic transmission are complicated but standards are very unforgiving.
