Default a proponderence about sbc engines

how many people have noticed that almost all camaro's have that crackle in the exhaust note around 3000 rpm when the engine is returning to idle? ive also noticed it in corvettes and monte carlos. but not once have i heard a truck with a 305 or a 350 have the same crackle sound after it gets revved. has anyone ever noticed this? does anyone know why it does this?

The trucks have a longer exhaust and they use larger mufflers. Camaros don't have the same back pressure so that's why they got that exhaust wrap.

I like the crackle.. Its nowhere near as bad as my bug or Nissan though.. When I let off the gas from near redlinein one of them, they pop real loud and flames come out the pipe.

Those pops are caused by unburnt fuel lighting off in the exhaust pipes. If the car has a good stock exhaust sytem, the noise is not noticeable. If you have a carbed car, you can get some healthy bangs by turning the key off for about 2 seconds and then back on while driving around 30 MPH. Did that to a traffic cop and he went for his gun. LOL

mine wasnt as bad with the stock exhaust, but is very noticable off throttle, and sounds similar accelerating now that i dont run a muffler. my friends truck has an edlbrock dual exhaust, and another kid has a 350 with hollowed mufflers and cats, and neither of them have the same crackle, and they are both short beds. even when my friend only ran with a cat, it didnt have that crackle, but was still very quiet.
