Hi, I have recently found a 1993 camaro with a v6 for a really good price $1,000. I am wanting to make the car into a cheap street/strip car, I already have a daily driver so the car can be stripped to the max, just needs to be fairly reliable. I would like to drop in a v8 small block 305-350, something I could build up slowly as I go and something very cheap. So what would be the best engine for me and would I have to do a trans swap to or just a performance rebuild, in the end I want the car to run in the mid 13s range: also do I need anything else for the swap????
You seem to be on a budget, so I'd suggest buying a used (surplus yard) 350 LT1 or LT4, with the trans if possible. Usually you can find a good, guarranteed to be sound (but you're on your own from there on) engine that runs, doesn't smoke, etc. (Alternately, buy a real beater and then get a bargain long block or even a crate engine if you can afford it.
You can easily get your car, with this engine, into the low 13s with a few well-selected mods: headers, a cam, some head work later. The rear axle will be the weak link but just take care of the one you have and think before you spend money on repairing or replacing it down the road -- upgrading would make sense.

I'd also take under consideration a crate motor, as you may be able to get a good deal on something with more than the 330 advertised hp that the LT4 offers.
If a crate motor proves too expensive, and an LT4 can't be found, maybe consider an LT1 out of a Corvette, as it has the 4 bolt main.
go with a old 350 pre 87 and make it with a carb. that will haul *** for around 1500. it will be decent or put the money into the car you have. depends on what your comfortable with working on.
