problem getting a new engine to start
I just put a 383 in my 82 camaro and after getting everthing hooked up it doesnt start. The engine turns over fine but it spit gas out the carb and flames out of the exhaust. I'm pretty sure i have the distibuter lined up right, but i could be wrong. I've built a few engine before and never had trouble like this before. Its driving me insane and i need some good advise.

have seen this problem many times. more times than not the distributor was 180 degrees off. it is a text book mistake and everybody does it. i have done it while making sure i didn't do it. LMAO .Sick.

I agree with sick.
I did it recently![&o]Last year I started putting a motor together and finished it up this year after a long time out. Last year saw the cam and chain. This year saw the distributer. Well when the marks on the gears are together it is on TDC fire for #4 (its a 4.3 V6, it would be 6 if memory serves on your V8). Luckily my brother was helping me think why my motor would not start and he mentioned that and I thought for a long time but could not remeber so I turned the motor where it should be and reset the dist and it runs great.
But this is just between us. Dont tell nobody else I did that OK.

RE: problem getting a new engine to start
Distributor out 180 degree is a very common. Most people line up the timing mark on the front pulley not realizing that the front pulley goes around twice as fast as the ditributor. Not only has the #1 piston be at TDC but it must be at TDC on the compression stroke, both intake and exhaust valves closed. You can pull the valve cover and look at the springs, or place a finger on the spark plug hole and feel the compression building up. The cam can also be out 180, but wont happen if the timing marks are aligned properly per the FSM.

i tryed turning the distiduter 180 degress now it only blows gas out of the carb. the crank turns about a half a revolution the spit gas out of the carb. now think i had it almost right the first time just did have the dist cap lined up right(think i had the #8 clyinder firing when #1 should) do you think that might be the cause of the orginal problem?
