PAINT HELP
LOOKING TO PAINT THE CAMARO IN A MONTH OR TWO, HOWEVER I'VE NEVER PAINTED A CAR BEFORE,I HAVE THE SHOP, A 6 HP COMPRESSOR AND A BASIC PAINT GUN, QUESTION, IS THERE ANY TYPE/BRAND OF PAINT EASIER TO USE THEN ANOTHER,ANYTHING I SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM?, OH YEAH I'LL PRACTICE ON MY BRONCO FIRST, THANKS FOR ANY INFO.
Make sure your compressor is not blowing oil into the sprayer, aslo make sure you hose insides are free of oil. Many compressors have oil feed oil into the air to keep air tools lubricated. Check with your paint supplier as to which paint to use with your set up. Just remember, preparation of the surface to be painted is the most important thing.
I have worked as a painter and can tell you that your compressor and gun are really not up to the task. You really need a compressor that can run a constant 7-9 cfm, the gun might be OK for primer but if it is a cheap gun it won't lay paint as well as a good gun. for referance the last car I did the paint and materials alone were over $600 and it was not anything crazy paint or color wise, so realize that it might be a costly learning curve. I never discourage people from doing thier own work on a car but in this case you really should think about this. You also really should have a fresh air resperator, (not just a charcoal filter mask) some of these new paints can make you sick. My advice is to maybe do all/as much of the body work and prep and then pay a shop to just lay on the paint. Paint jobs are 99% prep and body work. Do yourself a favor and learn as much as you can before trying this, maybe see if a local Voc.school has a class you can take.
thaks for the advice, prep work wont be a problem,i've done prep before, i had not thought of the resperator issues,, my gun is a gravity fed gun, pretty cheap .so i'll do the prep and primmer and learn some more before painting, i'm very hands on with my projects, and leard quick just never done final paint myself. if i screw up i can always sand it and hand it to a shop, then just have to listen to the wife fuss about the money!! thanks agin
As for prep work.... what all needs to be done. I want to get my car painted, but like most I am on a budget. If I can knock some of the cost of getting it painted by prepping the car myself. I need to go talk to a shop to see how much they even take off for prep work, and if it's worth my time. But what all consist of "prep work" for a paint job?
Learning to spray the primer right is actually going a long way at teaching yourself. I am in the same boat you are. Ive done all the sanding, grinding, juicing and straightening but have not laid paint yet. Ive laid primer. I dont trust myself enough to lay paint because it doesnt take much for it to go to hell. But goodluck man! More power to ya! Oh and Id deff recommend the Bronco first if thats your learning tool.
Like was said before make sure you get a water seperator and put it in the line before the gun.
Also, temperature/humidityis a big thing. Try to spray when its not really humid and when its not too cold. The humidity will introduce to much vapor into the paint and the cold will cause the paint to take too long to set-up which can cause problems. Since it is getting to be winter time (not sure where you live), try to make sure the shop you are using is more or less enitrely heated. i.e. dont have a torpedo heater running as your heat source because it wont heat uniformally and it will blow around a lot of particulate.
Finally. Keep it clean! Thats the most important thing. You cant be too clean. It doesnt take much to get fish-eyes, and oragne peel.
