Default Overheating

hey my buddy had a 97 camaro (base model) v6 , he had no need for it so he practically gave it to me for free. i drive it around once in a while i noticed when i come to a stop my temperature gauge shoots all the way up then when i accelerate it cools back down. now the heat when on takes a while to heat up, and when im moving the heat is fine, but when i go idle the heat goes away and thats when my temp gauge starts to shoot up. i replaced the thermostat but that wasnt it. any ideas what this could be?

its a 97, on the safe side I would fluish the rad and change the thermo. how many miles are on the car? but remember at a stop camaro are known to heat up bc no air in cooling htem down.

id replace the water pump. my mom's ford minivan has the same problem with the heat going away when idling, even though it has a 210 thermostat. id go ahead and replace the water pump, flush the entire cooling system including the heater core, and test to make sure the fan comes on at the right temp

Before you spend money on parts, make sure the fans are running when it overheats. If not, fix that problem.

[X(] sounds pretty normal if all other systems are functioning normal. fans dont come on til around 220 for most gm stuff and due to lack of air flow while stopped i would expect the gauge to show this rise to nearly the same temp if standing still. make sure all components and antifreeze are in good shape and if so id say all systems normal. my 95 z28 does the exact same thing kurt
