Is my 1995 Z-28 running hotter than normal?
I've had my Z for a year and a half but the cooling system was screwed in it for a while and I ended up having to replace the engine. I just got the car back from having the engine changed but it's been months since I last drove the car and I'm not sure what to think of the temps I'm getting on the dash temperature guage. It never gets in the red but the needle goes to about 3/4 which isn't far from the red before the fans kick on to cool it down to about half-way. Is this normal behavior for these engines? Since mine wasn't right before I don't have anything to compare it to. I changed the radiator maybe 6 months ago so I know it's good. I guess I just want to feel good about this engine and know it's not going to overheat on me. I am thinking about getting a new fan switch from Summit Racing that turns the fans on earlier.
I know the feeling ,ask questions and get know answers.i would just change out the sending unit, that way you know its new .i'm not sure about the newer camaro but i think these newer cars are suppose to run a little hotter than the older cars.220-230 is common for a newer vehicle, older vehicle'srun about 190-200.if your not comfortably with how hot is running ,take the sending unit out and look at it (should have temp. setting on it )and go with one that is alittle lower.you might look at the thermostat if it has one.like i said i'm not to sure about these newer camaro's,i have a 78 camaro with a 454,2 different breeds
I used to have a '78 with a 350 in it years back and I wish I'd never sold that car. I sold it for financial reasons. It had a 350. It was much easier to work on too with that huge engine compartment and it's simplicity. I'm definitely going to order that lower temp sending unit if only to ease my mind.
hey, sorry it took so long to reply, should have posted in the LT1 forums, but oh well.
the awnser to your question is yes that is completely normal for it to go to 3/4 and go back half way down. if your air conditioning is properly working than it usually wont get that high though. it is a good idea to get the fan turn on switch, because in traffic it gets hot, but dont forget to turn it off because it will wear out your fan motor.
hope this helps to ease your mind.
