Default Matching numbers

Question. Found an engine I've been looking for since 2005. It's a 402 for a 71SSCamaro with a TH 400 that was wrecked in '77 with 44K miles on it.All original down to the carberator. The block dates Oct '70, intake Nov. 70, and the heads April 13 '71. The car I'm putting it in, a Z27 coded SSwas made in the 2nd week of June. Would this amount to a matchingnumbers car?

Default RE: Matching numbers

Hi,
Hope I can help. What you have is a "numbers / datecorrect" SS, which is no small feat in this day and age. It means that the dates and build dates are correct foran SScar built that year.
I have a "matching numbers" 71 Z. It means that the VIN on the dash matches the VIN stamped on the block, which matches the VIN stamped on the M21 Muncie 4-speed. The 3.73, 10 bolt rear is also original.
Interestingly, my car came with an "incorrect" Holley 1850 carburator. I searched for months trying to locate the "correct" 1408-1 780 cfm Holley carb. It was only made one year and is only correct to the 71 Z 4-speed and the 71 4-speed vette. Finally found one on Ebay (not cheap!!), bought it and had it rebuilt by Holley. Works great!
Anyway, "matching numbers" is all about what is original to that car when the car left the factory.

you can have a correct date code, which thats pretty close, but numbers matching means "came in car"
