Default high rpms

I am not too car savvy but I am tring to learn alittle about my car. I own a 1991 camaro rs and with that said you most likely know more about my car than I do. I just had the motor rebuilt and at an idel the rpms are at 2000, I am yet to have the car above 50 mph but even at that speed I am scared that I will blow the motor or sling a rod( at 50mph the rpms are at 5500). Please help.

If you are at 5500 rpm at 50 mph your trans is not shifting. You high idle tells me that maybe your tps sensor is not adjusted right, pick up a manual for the car and it will give you the specs you need and how to set it.

thank you I have the Haynes manual, is this something that I need to fix right away, ohh, could this be what is causing my check engine lite to be coming on?Also I have heard that I should not run the car over 50mph untill I hit 500 miles, is this the case or is it safe to run it higher and if so what is a safe speed?

When I break in a new motor I do the following
1. start it let run for maybe 15 min. then change oil and filter
2. drive it maybe 25 or 30 miles keeping rpm below 4000 then change oil and filter
3. Stay below 4500 rpm for the first 500 miles, change oila and filter again, then proced to drive like normal (in my case beating the crap out of)
Speed is really critical but engine RPM is, and yes I would fix these things before driving much further.

also verify the timing, make sure to follow the manual or the timing will be off
