Default gauges

I recently bought a nice '69 Z28 clone that needs just a few items. I'm inexperienced and am learning as I go. It's a 4-speed with console gauges. Currently the fuel and oil pressure gauges work, but not the temperature or amp gauges. I checked Year One and the price of new gauges are around 65.00 each. Is there any way to find out first if the gauges are bad or if there may be some other problem before spending the money?

Default RE: gauges

The factory gauges on the first gens are mediocre at best. Auto meter makes a really cool kit that fits exactly in the stock location. They are round gauges that are very accurate, I got one of these for my 68 and am very happy with them, I think I paid about 200 bucks for the whole kit.

Thanks. The fuel gauge works OK, and I just replaced the oil pressure gauge. The temp gauge and amp gauge don't move at all. I haven't had any time lately, but I plan on checking for a short in the wiring. I just hate to pay for new gauges without knowing for sure what the problem is. If I can't figure it out, I may just go with the package you're talking about so that they all match. My back-up lights don't work either, and I know it's not the bulbs. Could it be related?
