Dash Lights Not Lighting Up

The dimmer control switch will cause all the dash lights not to work if it is bad and (I believe) if factory radio, even the radio display will go out, at least it did on my jeep.

You can't assume that. The dimmer portion illuminates the gauges through resistance. All the way counter-clockwise, when you feel it click, is an on-off switch that works the interior lights. That's a separate operation from the dash lights dimmer part of the switch.
alright ya i see what ur saying, im still learnin ha
am i gonna have to unscrew the dash or somethin to pull it out?
im just tryin to figure a way to get to the back of the **** now, so i can check wires, connections, etc

There are a few screws in the dash, remove them and the whole thing will pop out. They are only about $35 at Advanced Auto.

heres the headlight switch. i believe the dash dimmer setup is inside it on a 74. u turn the push pull switch to adjust the dash lights.

in order to change i think the handle comes out and the ring holds the switch in unscrews. i dont think u take the dash out but not sure. been a long time sence working on a 74 car.

My bad! I forgot it was a 74. I was thinking 4th gen.

check the fuse. with a 12vt checker and check it all with a 12vlt checker. i had this happen to me coming home first time fuse looked fine but it hairline fractured and didnt think it went bad. 2nd time was a Smokey cloud inside my fuse was kinda funny

hey guys this problem of mine is going to be on the backburner for a while
someone drove into my car tonight while i was in my friends house..

so a new question..
when paints chipped off and bare metal is exposed.. what can i do to prevent it from rusting..

bummer. well u ruff it up with some sand paper and paint it. if u have insurance involved u will not want to do anything like that till they do there thing.
