Default Code P0171 & P0174

I have code P0171 & P0174 on my 99 SS. It's system too lean (bank 1 & bank 2). Are the injectors the cause? Will I damage the engine driving it 5 minutes to the dealer? How much am I looking at for repair? Thanks.

It won't hurt the car driving it for a few minutes, just drive easy. Running lean could bean injector problem, a clogged fuel filter, a bad fuel pump, a misfire, a pressure regulator problem, a sick O2 sensor, or a vacuum leak. Depending on what is broken will determine the cost. Fuel pump expensive, cracked vacuum hose cheap.

well it could be a number of things, as described earlier by z28Pete.It could still be a vacuum leak or a injector issue.

Glad someone actually used the search feature

Well, you could start off by checking the vacuum lines and seeing if any of them are cracked...

Check everything from cheapest to most expensive. Usually a leaky vacuum would throw another code, but not always. Since those are cheapest, I'd just check all the hoses under the hood first. Just look for cracks in the plastic hoses or dry-rotted rubber connectors and replace as necessary.

If you have a Haynes manual, it details how to check everything else. They cost about $25 at AutoZone and they save HUNDREDS in dealer repair costs.

The most common reason for those lights to come on are failing oxygen sensors... when an 02 sensor fails it reads a 1000x10^x ( really big number) oxygen percentage ... the car attempts to compensate by dumping a ton of fuel into the air to fuel mixture but the computer still thinks the car is running lean... i have also rarely seen a bad mass air flow sensor cause this code
