helping Work on a mid 80's caprice classic which has 4 headlights 2 High and 2 low. when the highs are on the lows would stay on.

Switching the stock set up to only 2 headlights. Halogen light bulb with the high and low built into the one bulb. Stock 5th gen camaro.

have both headlights hooked up. with the lows on the lights are very dim and there is voltage going to the high beam wires.

also when only the lows are on the light on the dash that comes on with the high beams is on dimly. (probably a voltage feedback)


when the high beam wires are unhooked then the light for the high beam on the dash goes out.


are we missing something? possibly a relay?

Usually there is a separate relay for low and high beam regardless if there are 2 or 4 lights. I am not sure how you wired up your lights, but if you used a single relay, it is not going to carry enough current to for both beams on at one time.

 

If you run run both the high and low at the same time you'll blow the bulbs trust me I just did it last night with some 9007 bulbs they literally exploded glass shattering you'll have to figure out how to make it so only 1 filament is on at a time

 

The Caprice had two wires to each bulb, one ground and one supply. The outer bulb is low beam, the inboard bulb is high. You need to figure which terminal on the new bulb is ground, low, and high. Then connect your original ground, low beam, and high beam wires to the corresponding terminals on the new bulb. Sounds like you have something crossed.
