camaro problems
Well, I want to introduce myself, my name is andy and I'm new at all this muscle car world. This is my first camaro. I was actually searching for a mustang g.t but I couldnt find one in my price range worth buying but lucky me I've also always loved the camaros. I just bought a 91 camaro rs. I know I should of gone z28 or iroc but its what I found. I had alot of problems with it when I first got her a week ago. The guy that sold it to me told me that it was just the fuel pump that was jacked up. I never replaced the fuel pump but I have almost everything else. The car was stalling on me on the lights, had week horepower, white smoke and just sounded crappy.
I replaced the fuel filter, plugs, wires, distributer cap and rotor, changed stock induction to edlebrock air filter, Idle Air Control Valve, and the TSP. All I have left is to change the oil and transmission oil and filter. The car is about 90% better then what it was when I first got it. But I'm still having horsepower loss somewhere. Sometimes when I put it in drive or reverse it dies. I would have to press the gas then put in gear to go but after I do that it wont do it anymore. I've noticed most of my problems happen when the car is nice and warm, never when its cold. I'm a honda guy and like I said this is my first camaro and really just got tired of spending alot of money to make a 100 horsepower car into a 300 horsepower car.lol.. Anyway, if you got any suggestions please let me know. In about a month or so I wanted to uprade my TBI into Holley Carb and intake. I have no idea what the process would be but I know I would increase some horses by doing so and need some guidence.
Thanks guys,
andy

Dumping the TBI will cause you lots of problems. It's all tied into the computer...
You still getting white smoke? if so that usually means water. is it using antifreeze..
tell us more about the car, enigne, tranny etc...Pic's?
In general, start by upgrading to a better flowing exhaust, (mnake it easier for the air to get out)better flowing air filter system,(eiser for the air to get in)and a chip for the computer....

well, i replaced the exhaust with magnaflow. it sounds alot better. yes it still smokes and i flushed the radiater and put new antifreeze in it. ever since ive been replacing parts on it now it over heats not sure whats going on. i did a complete tune up, changed the fuel filter, plugs, wires, distributer cap and roter, exhaust, o2 sensor, idle air control valve, throttle possition sensor, edlebrock air filter. I even did a oil change today and still nothing. The car runs poor and white smoke still comes out the back. sometimes it turns off when i get to the light. when its cold it studders when i press the gas, when its hot it responds good but still week on power. the car sounds like a ragedy truck dont know.
Before you go any further have a basic check done on the cooling system. You mentioned lack of power, stalling, white smoke, overheating. All signs of something serious.
Find a repair shop that can do a basic combustion chamber leak test on the cooling system. It takes all of about 10 minutes to do and it can show you instantly if you have cooling leak into the combustion chamber. If you want to try it yourself look for this.
Cooling system tester.

Simple tester that has a blue liquid that will change to yellow in color if combustion gases are present in the cooling system. The one above is just one style, some are hand pumps, some vauum controlled, just depends on what you like. I like the hand pump style. If you use it make sure the cooling level is down some. Put the tester in the radiator cap opening and don't allow antifreeze to get into the pump, screws the reading. Run the car at idle and at 2000 rpm in park(have a buddy goose the throttle so you don't get run over if it slips in gear) and see if the blue becomes yellow.

This **** if funny.... I found out yesterday that if I dont turn on my ac or heater the car will over heat. without one of the two on it will over heat with time. its just too funny how it works.
Makes sense that the car cools better with the heat on. Your heater system has the heater core which is actually a small version of a radiator. When the heater is on it is pushing air across the core. The heat you feel in the dash is from the core being cooled.
Does the car actually throw any heat out of the heater system? Just a small amount of heat then goes cool? All signs of a cooling system problem.
