Buying a project?
Question for all you second-gen experts. I am currently thinking of buying a 79 Z28, the only problem is i'm not quite sure what I may be getting into. The car requires some engine and transmission work which is ok, however the body is another story. The car was painted with gray primer over the detieriorating paint to "prevent rusting" buy the current owner. And the under body was sprayed with what looks like some type of rhino lining. Although the body only shows bad damage around the door handles and a very small spot of rust on the lower right and left fender, im not sure what might be under that rhino lining or how i would go about getting that stuff off. I'm looking for a car to fix up and enjoy for years to come, but I dont know much about body work so I'll be learning as I go. Any one have any helpful hints or suggestions on how to remove rhino lining.
depends on how much. i did the exact same thing bought a 79z28 with what i thought were just a couple rust spots on front fender. as i started sanding it out it became a whole and then "it" became "they". but not a big deal just a little more time. the under carriage just has rubber under coating i believe its something a lot of people up north use because of all the salt, pain to remove. just pull up carpet in the floor pans and look that way. if floor pans are in good shape you should be alright. if not floor pans are only 37.00 a piece. if you want to remove the lining you will need some paint stripper, a big jack and pressure washer. wouldnt worry about it much if floor pans are good. the primer. did he use good primer or your everyday basic 1.00 a can stuff. if it the cheap stuff you will need to get it off, not easy job, gunks up a lot of sand paper. if you decide to remove all paint down to metal which is what im doing watch out for where the roof meets the pillar too the body. they used body solder in the crease and talk about a pain to repair. i saw a crack in mine at this part and was going to weld up the crack when i started all this stuff kept running down the side of the car when i asked a friend of mine what it was he told to just stop and fill in with body filler unless i wanted to remove all of it and fill it all in with new weld so watch out there. other than that remember these cars were made when they still used "real" metal so its fairly easy to weld in patches or fill in wholes if needed. also check door sag and striker bolt. these doors are so heavy if not maintained the door will sag put pressure on striker and start to rip the metal out. again no big deal. any more questions just ask as i have almost completely removed all paint, gutted interior, removed all trim inside and out. heres what i started with
