Default Help with buying a project '81

Hello all,

I am new to the forum and just need your help deciding if the camaro i found is a "good deal". my intended goals are not a full restoration but rather i would like to build a weekend/track car (safely lol) that i can build up over time.

here is the link to the posting: http://baltimore.craigslist.org/ctd/1831010683.html

i am going to ask for some more specific pictures of the rust spots and the rest of the car in general today so hopefully he can get back to me with that later today and i will post them. Btw it was originally had a 229ci motor so if there is a tremendous amout of difficulty to swap a 350 into it, please let me know lol.

Run away. The frame rail is what really does it for me. Replacing one looks like too much work for me and I like doing my own work. The filler panel or trunk seal has been leaking if the trunk is rusted out and with rust along the bottom of the quarter I'd bet the trunk drop offs have started too. The tail panel under the rear bumper would be another suspect place.

Good parts car, if you buy a diff. one to restore you'll be kickin yourself for not buying that parts car, it does get pretty pricey.

Heh, I just sold my 81 ttop berlinetta camaro original tranny and engine running. No rust, good interior clear title for 600. For track cars I sell full ones for 300. The 80 rs my forum name is made from I gave away to a racer. Had minimal rust. I guess it depends on your location? I hear many cars back east are rust buckets. The only one rust buckets I pick up are trans ams and firebirds from back east. My friend does dirt track racing and he will never pay over 300 for a rolling chasis car, he actually gets them for free. So maybe if you are going to race it you should start with a solid frame. So you can focus on performance and not sheet metal. If you were going to restore it I would say buy it.

I definitely wouldn't buy that one for a starter. My original project was in that condition (bought it online) and it required so much attention all over the car, that I found another shell to use.

I decided to not get it since it seemed like way more work than what i wanted to put in. Im not really going for a resto project just more of a street/strip car. more strip than street though lol. I found another one:http://chambersburg.craigslist.org/cto/1866905402.html

The only problem is the guy does not have a title but he said he may be able to obtain one from who he got it from. Which leads me to another question, If i bought a car without a title, would there be a way to get one so that i could tag the car?

you could always get the other one and take the tags off of it

Well, here in Cali you can file for lost title, costs $18 but the previous owner may owe money on it. When was it last registered? My friend had to pay $450 in fees. He bought the car with just a bill of sale. If you have the previous owner it is easy.
