Do you mean when you turn on the heat?

I had a buddy have something similar to him. his heater core went out. made a god-aweful noise when he turned it on. autozone sold him a new one pretty cheap. these things can go out eventually. your car is pretty old. i wouldnt attribute it to anything other than happenstance

Just plain, old age can make sounds appear that once weren't there. Just ask my wife after I have a couple bowls of chili.
Seriously though, if it sounds like a whining, grinding noise, it's probably due to a bad bearing in the blower motor. It is an electric motor after all, and they don't last forever.
If it sounds more like a loud "playing cards in the bicycle spokes" (yes we did that as kids), then it's possible you could have leaves or a stick stuck in the fan's squirrel cage blades.
Either way, you need to go digging after the fan.

Spec I've never heard of a heater core making noise when they go bad unless you count the leaking noise of all of the fluid coming out. haha! I'm with 69 on the one.

i dunno man. it was a long time ago when i was very young. probably mis-spoke when i said it was the core, but it was part of his heater that went out. we bought the fan for it at vatozone and all was well

If the heater core was making a noise, it must have been the dreaded "Niagara Falls" syndrome.
