another question for the motor heads here
after i put the transmission fluid in the truck as i was talking about in the other thread. i went out to the truck the next day to drive it agian and see if it would still shift alright, i fired her up and when i revved it up and i could what sounds like the engine sucking too much air into the carb. i asked another friend and he figured it might be a dry rotted vacuum line cause when i revved the engine, it wanted to die and cut out. but it didnt do any of this when i drove it the other day.
heres a pic of the bad boy

[&:] from your description of the sound, a vacuum leak is a real possibility. should be easy to find just listen, a piece of heater hose to the ear and the other end searching the engine compartment can help with the less than obvious ones. yes the brittle rubber and plastic vacuum pieces will break when they feel like it

what it ended up being was a bad fuel filter . when i started it up with the bad filter , id have to pump the pedal 3x to get the engine to run then the filter wouldnt let any more gas through so the truck died. i figured this by taking the fuel filter off and just hooking the fuel line to the carb to check it out and see if it would do the same as the bad filter did. actually it ran 10x better. i got a new filter on it and it runs great.

The easiest way to find a vaccume leak is with a can of either starter fluid or brake cleaner. You spray the engine area where the sound is coming from, and when the RPMs go up, you have found the location of the vaccume leak. Just becareful not to spray too much around the exhaust manifolds or headers, this can cause a fire.
