454 timing help
I don't go by initial timing ever. you want your car's timing to be right when you are up in your power band so if you have a performance engine, you should be checking it at full advance. with this train of thought your timing should be around 35 degrees (in a street mill) if your car can handle it. if not back down to 33-34 total
just the idle timing, Ill save all the advancin to the mechanics, I moved the dist while detailing the motor and just want to put it back where it was. It has a temp, cast iron stock intake on it now (the high rise doesnt fit under the hood) After the hood comes ,and winter is over it will be set up by the pros,I'm just a paint and body guy who trys some stuff.
that does help out as long as I do this right. Thanks

After seeing your reply I had to search around to find out how to do the full advace timing. There was tons of info (unlike initial timing)I thought it sounded hard, but it seems simple enough, now I just have to get the tape. Thanks. here's a link that tells it step by step if that helps anyone else.. http://www.chevelles.com/archive/files/tottime.html
initial timing is 8.full advance is 35 ,just unhook the vacuum advance, run the engine up about 2500 rpm's and set the timing on 35 ,simple.of course you have to have a timing light that allows you to degree it in.
I got the light, and just figured out I don't need the tape. but it seems to like the timing set at 12 to 14, I have to hook up a tach to do the advance, just to be sure I'm above 2500. It's cold and wet here and she seems to run different????? I'll check it when its warm and dry out.

if your car is running different in the rain and wetness, you probably either have a cracked cap or ba plug wires
It's not that it has a 3" straight through exhaust and seems painfully louder when it's cold out, like loud bass. And seems to run a bit better, could just be the sound, but at that level who knows. And I'll save the springs for a hands on teaching.
