RE: whats the highest speed its capable of
i think LT1's are governed at like 110ish???
I've seen video's of camaro's going up to 160
Top speed isn't really determined by the engine, but by the drivetrain, so a V6 w/ the same drivetrain would in theory have the same top speed as a V8 car.

The LT1's were only governed if you bought it without z rated tires... other wize there is no governer.
you are correct on the top speed being limited by drivetrain but the engine is usually whats going to limit top speed... you can have a car thats geared to do 300 mph but unless you have some serious power and aerodynamics theres no way your going to get there....
for example i know that in 6th gear my car runs at about 80ish mph @ 2000rpm (if i remember correctly) so in theory at 4000rpm it would be 160mph and at 5000rpm it would be about 200... however there is no way theres enough power and aerodynamics to get it there
[dont judge me on my numbers thats just what seemed to be what i remembered]
and for a stock ls1 SS ive heard around 160mph top speed and i dont think that the z28 would be too far behind that... (these are just numbers that ive seen from test drives and articles)

RE: whats the highest speed its capable of
I got a 00 SS M6 when I first got it I jumped on the highway and like 2 in the morning and tried to see if I can top it out. I got it to 150 in 5th at 5100 RPM and still had 6th but wasn't able to shift into 6th due to no more straigh highway, and it was bone stock also. So I think 160 is very capable from my car if I had more room and a higher speedo.

RE: whats the highest speed its capable of
Stock an LS1 will do about 160 top speed (if not governed) in 5th. The engine can't pull even up to that in 6th with stock power -- top speed in 6th is only around 135 - the gearing is just too tall. If you have mods to make about 450 RWHP the car will top out in 5th at around 185, but the aerodynamics get pretty scary in that range unless you work on them with a good front air dam, etc.

of course it has something to do with the engine....
a 50 hp engine isnt going to push a car to 200 mph... unless its in a vaccum with zero air resistance....
u need to have the power to counter act the force of the air pushing on the car at higher speeds

the top speed has nothing to do with the engine...just specs of the trans and gears...

RE: whats the highest speed its capable of
sorry for being unclear...i think a V6 car would not have a top speed that far behind a V8, yes once you begin going ridiculously fast, to the point where you need hp to overcome the air, i'd say the trans, gears, tires, and aerodynamics are far more important...i'll read that article now...
