How often will I street race?

Ok thanks alot z28pete. That helped.

So do i need to go to the muffler shop and they just make a custom cat? Or do i buy a magnaflow cat or something from a store? And then what do you mean by gutting the cat?

this thread makes me sad. unless the rules are different in canada, they typically dont let underaged drivers race at the strip with a street vehicle, junior dragsters and whatnot only right? something about a 14 year old going 150mph and running a 9 on his first time driving stick doesnt add up either. ive taught people to drive stick.... I call BS on that story bigtime. I would suspect you were allowed to ride along if anything at all. I also happen to know what it takes to make a 351 run 9s,..... this whole thing just stinks

OK KID @$%& LISTEN UP. I am trying to give you a warning and save you some freaking money and maybe your car. I dont know any performance set of heads you could buy for under 600 bucks (being the total cost you want to spend). A good set of gears is around 200 and thats just for the gears not the install kit. You can guess on a extra 300 plus bucks to have them installed. Now for a cam you should know by now you cant just slap a hot rod cam in there and go. If you plan on running even a mild cam you will need new valve springs around 200 bucks, and i would recomed replacing the push rods around 80 bucks. Also i dont think i have ever seen a real name brand cam under 200 bucks for any car. Maybe a cheap ebay type regrind that may gain 5 horse or loss of 20 but hey you win some loss some right.
Here is a better brake down
gears 200 bucks, plus install 300 plus install kit and fluid 75 bucks
Cam 200 bucks? valve springs 200 bucks, rods 60-80 bucks, installed cost would be almost what you want to spend total.
Performace heads can very a lot in price but i can tell you your not going to find a fully decked set for under 600 bucks. Even a set of rebuilt and worked heads are probaly going to cost you that.
But after all this you still have one big problem. Do you know what that is? You said your engine was swaped out of a 90 camaro. That was only one TBI engine offered in 1990. Maybe some one swaped it out to a carb but you are about to get your fillings hurt very bad.
1990 305 is a LO3 engine with 9.3 to 1 compression. The engine pumps out a masive 170HP @ 4000 RPMs rated at the crank. Considering the 700R was not the best tranmission in the world i would expect maybe 145 to the wheels.
Deleating the fuel injection and adding a good carb and intake manifold might give you a little gain but only if you know what the heck you are doing and do it right by dialing in the carb and timing. But when i say a good jump im talking about 25 horses tops under perfect condition. If your engine was already carb this makes this a little less strees full since you have most of the vacuum lines in place.
In 87 TBI was not offered however there was a 4bbl 305 that came in the Z28s and forumlas. It was rated at 170HP @ 4400RPMs the code for it is LG4.
Here is how you can tell what engine came in your car from the factory. The 8th digit in your vin number is your engine code.
LG4 factory vehicles are represented by (H)
LO3 facotry vehicles are represented by (E)
You have to remeber there a billion diffrent modles of the 305 with diffrent heads, valves, compression's, manifolds, etc. Your engine has a low CR to start with and probaly has some good miles on it.
The fact of the matter is even if you add a good intake manifold, well dialed in carb , headers, heads, a mild cam, and springs you are stilling dealing with the stock bottom end that is only going to allow you to do so much. I would say you would be lucky to make 225 to the wheels with that hole list and that would be a heck of a push. If you had a better 305 to start with it might be a little diffrent but your just not going to pull any real power out of it with what you are trying to do.
If you still want to build this engine then you need to start by posting some pictures of your set up. If you have the carb on hand or on the car and your still running a factory intake manifold then that needs to be the first thing to go. And since you can pick up a good intake manifold for around 180-300 bucks its probaly going to be the best way to go. You may have one on the car but i didnt see it in your sig.
Gears are also a good way to go. Giving your engine was a 305 that came out of the car you do not have the best gears from the factory.
Auto came with 2.73s
STDs came with 3.23s
I hope some of this helps and you dont think we are just bashing on you. We are trying to warn you and help so you dont make the same mistakes as so many other people have done before you. Thats kind of the hole point of a forum.

I think i have 3.08's in the rear though? Ok, the MAIN reasons i dont want to get a 350 is cuz i have some brand new parts on my 305 that i dont want to sell because i will have lost like 100 bucks selling used. Sowill i be able to still use my 305 intake on the 350? And the headers, Can i use them on a 350 that i had on my 305? And last, The performce AFB carter 4 barel carb, can i use that on a 350, that was on my 305?
I will try to convince my dadinto a father son swap thingy that will maybe make him help me out withbuying a 350. But will my tranny still be good if i use a 350 in it?

1.No one is giving you a hard time BECAUSE you have a 305. Its the fact that youclaim all this horsepower and people who know more than mostpeopleon this site are saying its not as easy as you think yet you argue with them.
2. Your ATV and Bronco stories are hard to believe because they are unheard off and you have no proof to back it up. The evidence and what you say doesnt line up with the numbers and other hardcore facts.
Honestly i think you have a good idea. IF you want to build a 305 then do it. It will be fun and you will learn alot. Then when you feel you are done dyno it and see how close to your goal you were able to get.
