Default How fast is a 3.8 v6 anyway?

So I finally bought the closest thing to my dream car (97 Camaro SS, but I settled for a v6 seeing as how the Z28 and SS are all above $15k anywhere even near here.) and it is a 97 Manual V6.

Coming from a history of slow vehicles such as a toyota tacoma, toyota camry, and jaguar vanden plas, this is the fastest thing I have ever driven; but how does it really compare to other vehicles (such as stock rice cars like lancers, wrx, etc.)

a STI or EVO will walk all over you. a v6 3.8 is around 200-205HP and 220-225TQ. it's equivalent(stock anyway) in the ricer market would be a 2G GST eclipse. which is around 220HP and 180TQ, with about 300 pounds less weight. these 2 cars ae preety much neck and neck, edge going to a camaro from a dig. and edge going to the GST from a roll.

you will walk all over almost all civics and what not though.

Ask The Stig! He's ran some pretty good times at the track with his V6. Low 15's if I'm not mistaken.

his car stock? ATM mine is completely stock, and I plan on getting in some 96 brake lights followed by various intake/exhaust stuff within the next few months. Maybe a V8 is in the future but nowhere near now.

the expected times for a 3.8 are between 15.7-15.9 for a standard tranny and between 15.9-16.1 for auto stock becuse the autos have little baby gears in the rear if you happen to have a Y87 auto then you got the 3:43s like a Z and then the autos should run 15.6-15.8 if launched properly.... i run faily conssitant 15.9 (with the convestion for my altitude) with just intake and exaught in my auto 3.8 stigs best is like 15.2 with full bolt ons.....back to your first question there are ricers out there that can beat you but only the uper crust of ricers the rest is food...

Well I completely appreciate how helpful everyoen has been to what was probably a total n00b question, TBH I somewhat expected to be flamed out of the forum xD. Anyways I plan on doing full bolt-ons as I get money.... Probably Cold-air intake, full exhaust, then others as I get cash.

Bolt-ons is about all you should do to a 3.8, no offense. The money spent try to catch-up to the speed of a z28 or ss could be spent on buying one of the aforementioned cars. Make no mistake though, you'll make take-out of the average jap cars.

My car runs just under 15 with full bolt ons. I have an auto transmission with the 3.42 gears and a stiffer suspension. Not exactly sure why mine is faster than Stigs... I wanna get a cam for my car and tune the ***** up... But that's a good chunk of cash and time spent. Ill prolly end up buying a truck this summer anyhow

no, not trying to play catch-up to a z28 or anything, I just want it to be faster than the average v6 camaro/ricer
