Default Type of Cam?

First off I would like to say hi since I am new to this forum and pretty much to the car world lol...Im looking for some help picking out a cam cuz it seems like there are so many out there...im pretty sure I want to order an xtreme energy 274 cam from comp cams but how do i know if i want a hydraulic flat tappet cam, a mechanical flat tappet cam or a mechanical roller cam? and can anyone tell me the difference between them? Thanks, its much appreciated.

welcome, cam selection really depends on the type of engine you want to build or the engine that you are putting it into more info on your engine or what you want to build would help alot. for example you don't want to use a cam with a huge amount of lift and long duration in a stock small block.so more info would help alot, but the best info i can give you is call the maker of the cam they can tell you what will work and what won;t work for what you want. hope this helps some.

Your car came with hydraulic flat valve lifters, so to make life simple and things affordable, you should stick with the same type cam. Retrofitting to roller lifters is an expensive proposition, and solid lifters require a lot of maintenance. As explained by Spiff, talk to a cam company rep, tell them how you plan to use the engine, and what you would like for the engine to do, and they will spec out a cam to meet your needs.
