Thermostat help
I've been told that if I get a new 160 degree thermostat that throttle responce and acceleration is better. I've found this link ...http://www.inct.net/~autotips/tstat.htm... and I'm thinking about changing it. Is this a good or bad thing to try to do myself. I dont do alot of things to my own car. Only minor things like changing oil and new brake pads. Think I should attempt this or pay someone to do it for me? Or should I leave the old one alone. Another thing I was wondering is will this actually keep my engine at 160 degrees? or will it be lowered slightly then it is now? After driving I think the engine is at 195 degrees...er the water temp at least. Its just what the gauge inside the car says.
Unless you are into drag racing where every last bit of power counts, changing thermostats is not going to make a noticeable difference. If you do change the stat and expect the engne to run at 160 deg. in traffic, you need to get the fans to come on at a lower temperature, because the engine temperature rises until the fans kick in. However, he engine will run cooler at highway speed because of the air being rammed into the radiator. There are a many methods of controlling bans, but I can't help you there, since you didn't mention which engine or year.
