Do you know what type of transmission you have and if it's an electrical sender or mechanical?

The 97s use a 4L60e auto transmission, or a 6 speed manual. Both use a VSS (vehicle Speed Sensor), where the speedo gears used to live. The VSS provides the speed signal to the PCM.The PCM drives the speedometer and has to be reprogrammed in order to correct the speedometer reading. A tuner can do it, or you could use a hand held programmer. Either way it is going to cost.
