Oil leak
Once again the lovely LT1 is dripping oil, you would think this would stop after all the fixes i've done to it. Its a 96' Z28, I just did the oil pan gasket in May, had the rear main replaced a few years ago and NOW its leaking from the front of the engine. After doing a little research I'm under the impression that it could be the seal on the crank that spins the water pump...haven't changed that yet and did take the water pump off to replace the gaskets. O and there is a coolant leak at the front AGAIN, guessing the gaskets didn't seat right. Either way anyone had these problems???????? Suggestions???
Every LT1 has the intake manifold start leaking, GM started them too early so it didn't seal properly, so eventually they all leak out of the back of the intake. Most people think it's the rear main, but it usually isn't. I'd check everything on the front cover, if you don't find anything you may have to go inside...
here's what i've done...we just recently replaced the intake gaskets...changed the oil sending unit...and still have a leak...i'm thinking mine might be the rear main as well. i've had numerous mechanics look at it and that's what we've come to assume. can anyone tell me if its a one piece or 2 piece seal for the rear main? i'm lost for answers and NEED HELP! thanks guys
I believe it's a 2 piece seal for the main, but the intake doesn't leak where the gaskets contact the heads, it's on the very back of the block where GM sealed it with...oh man, now I cna't think of the name, it pretty much amounts to silicon calk but there's a special name for it that's escaping my memory right now(wow, I'm only 18, you'd think that I wouldn't have memory problems
). Anyway, double check that part of the intake to make sure it got sealed correctly before you go for the rear-main.
