Default flywheel / starter issues

I have a 67 RS with the 327 & powerglide..I pulled out the 327 with the powerglide & installed a 383 with the turbo 400. The main issue that I am having at this point is the Starter to Flywheel problems..
I found out on my stock 327 has a 153 tooth Flywheel and on the 383 there is a 168 tooth Flywheel.
My stock Starter frm the 327 does not work on my 383.
I got a hold of a mini starter for the SBC which supposably work on a 153 or 168 and again the starter gear will make contact & turn the motor but it will not go back into the starter, It binds on the Flywheel & does not retrive back.
The mini Starter has the straight bolt pattern with 4 hole positions I tried them all & I tried shimming it left, right & middle = still binds!
I hear about a Starter that has the offset bolt positions is that the Starter type that I need????
Any info would be greatly appreciated......

Thanks

If the bendix gear doesn't kick back in, then it must be too tight of a fit against the flywheel/flexplate (that's assuming the bendix gear kicks back in like it should if bench tested off the engine). I don't follow you about the shimming left right and middle, are those the different bolt positions? Have you tried shimming under both bolt mounting points? The offset bolt pattern starter is what's for the 168 tooth flywheel, but you would have to check to see if your block is double drilled to accept one. Below is a link for the starter shimming procedure. Others may like to check the starter shaft to flywheel clearance, but due to possible gear thickness differences, checking the actual gear mesh is more accurate. https://camaroforums.com/forum/gener...himming-20175/
