Default Dating a Small Block Engine???

I have a 305 in my 81 Camaro that Im trying to get a date on the block but I cant narrow it down good enough. I have gotten it down to between 1980-84. My dad told me we needed to get it down to the exact year to get the right Manifold and Carb...I didnt think this was true?...I went to Natsyz28.com and found out what i already knew about you production year. Jus for my dads sake does anyone know where I can get a exact date. (Note: I called the local Lang's Chevrolet dealer and they could only go back as far as 1990.)...Even if I dont need to the exact year...I would still like to know as much as I can about what engine is in my Camaro...Its more of a pride thing.

Do you have a code stamped on the passinger side of the engine on the flat area(deck) in front of the head?

yah I grabbed the VIN number off of the passing Side front, as well as the blcok ID Code...and neither of them will narrow the date down to a single year....

There should be two stamped numbers/letters if there is only one look at the back of the block where the trans bolts on or by the oil filter. You really dont need the exact year to get a manifold for it or a carb I used a aluminum factory manifold off a 305 on my 305 it worked good and only cost $25 at the junk yard with the holley adapter. The 81 might have some computor stuff that may be why your dad is concerned.
