I emailed a local dyno shop and asked them about tuning my 1994OBD1 LT1, they said they could do it with no problems but told me this also ". The 1994 and 1995 pcm's are very susceptible to locking up during tuning, so we first need to install a socket in your pcm for back up with a prom chip. This process will cost $150.00 and it will include an extra prom chip and will take about 2 weeks to complete" Anyone heard of this? What is the actual part they are installing, does anyone sell it online?

 

The 94 and 95 do not have sockets for removable proms. The only socket is for the knock sensor module. The way to tune the PCM is to reflash it by loading new software through the diagnostic port. If the tuner screws up he can cause the PCM not to work properly, but in this case it can be reflashed back to stock. However, the tuning software may not be able to do it, and it may require using the GM Tech II diagnostic tool.
