Default Slot Issue

I own a 1981 Camaro Z28 that my father (original and still partial owner) had a non-factory radio installed. Problem is it is still that vintage design that is held in underneath the ****. I took off the face plate and it seems there is a metal plate with two holes for the **** and a rectangle for the center part. I was just wondering if anyone has put a modern standard sized head unit into this type of dash and how they went about doing it. Thanks.

Done it before in an old chevy pickup. It involves either a hacksaw, saw-zall, jigsaw (w/ metal blade) or die grinder w/ cutoff wheel generally, unless somebody here has done a 2nd gen Camaro specifically.
