4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

9 Attachment(s)
After many PMs, general HID install questions, and the request of one Ninja, I have decided to put together a basicHID install for the 4th gen, even those of uswho have sealed beams. Keep in mind, that pictures are from my 97 Camaro, so depending on year orvehicle, mounting locationsmay vary. All 4th gens with the exception of the 93-97 Firebirds will use 9006 for the lows, and 9005 for the highs. In general you HID kit will come with two ballasts w/brackets, two bulbs, and four sets of wires. These kits are pretty simple toplug up, but feel free to ask any questions. I didn't take pics ofany kits, as all mine are installed, and I really don't feel like taking it apart. :DFor the 98-02 Camaros, the install is a simple bulb swap, but I will show you how I routed the wires and where I mounted the ballasts. For those who have sealed beams there are two options to install the HID bulb.

Twist old bulb off... Then seal in new bulb using RTV.

Or you can purchase new housing from www.eurolamps.com. Picture will show you what the back of the housing is like.

First, you will need to find how/where you want to run your wires. You will havetwo sets of wires per bulb. One set plugs into the stock headlight harness and into the ballast. Then the other set plugs into the ballast and HID bulb.

On the drivers side, I ran the wires through what looks like used to be a stock air duct.

Attachment 41206 The duct I am referring to is the black piece at the bottom.

Driver side ballast install

Attachment 41207Attachment 41208

For the passenger side I ran the wires with some other wires that go behind the battery. Battery must be removed to access them.

In pic you will see the headlights on passenger side. Wire passage mentioned is almost right in the middle of the pic.
Pic is sideways...

Attachment 41209

Last but not least. Passenger side ballast install.

Attachment 41210Attachment 41211

Not really that hard. Just time consuming. Ballasts are just hanging from the brackets that came with my kit. Some kits come with tie wraps instead of brackets. Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks. http://eurolamps.com/eurolamps/camaro_headlights.htm

That is link to sealed beam conversion housings. Has some for the 98+ Firebirds/Trans Ams. You can probably get them without the bulbs, but not sure.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

wait, i havent had to change a bulb in the TA yet, but they arent sealed are they? i should be able to follow ur writeup and just have to mount the ballasts where they wont interfere with the lights as they flip up.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

According to Sylvania's website they are. They list the 4701 and 4703 as replacements. AutoZone shows this as the whole housing.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

I will have to check it out. my buddy with a 97 was complaining about this.... but i thought it was only for the earlier TA's.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

Just a heads up... I do not have HID installed for the brights, for two reasons. 1) I rarely have an opportunity to use them, and 2) repeated on/off cycles will wear them out faster.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

nice demo, thanks for putting this up for us. but on the driver's side, you referred tosomething that"looks like it used to be a stock air duct". what modifying did you do to not make this area an air duct anymore? im still a little bit of a novice, so please bear with me.[sm=smiley23.gif]

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

I have a cold air intake, which does not use it. You can see part of the intake in the left of the picture of said "duct".

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

i think i see what youre talking about. are the ballasts or the wires theirselves hanging from those holes? (the ones along the bottom edge of the underhood area, not the sides)

02StanGT 12-03-2008 03:27 PM

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

Yes. I put the brackets on the ballasts, then bolted the brackets to the pieces where the hood rests. Brackets are pretty stiff, so they aren't just swinging around.

tipdrip215 12-03-2008 03:30 PM

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

well, my car is all stock under the hood, so ill have to find a different way to run the driver's side wire since i dont have that vacant air duct spot like you do.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

yeah they are sealed beams, but eurolights.com sells H4701 and H4703 kits for 98-02 birds as well. however, if you have a 97 or older (H4666) they dont have anything for that yet.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

just installed my HIDs. ordered a lowbeam conversion kit from eurolights.com on the 4th, and got them saturday, and went right to work installing them. turns out, there were no ballasts needed, and no wiring at all. it ended up being just like changinga halogen bulb. now the car looks so awesome. only problems i ran into were the usual camaro headlight changing problems (getting the tabs on the side of the frame into the slots, etc.) the bulbs on the new housings are held in place by gold tabs, i ended up having to bend those slightly with tweezers to give myself more room to wigglethe housingaround and not havethe pinstouch the side of the mounting area when i was pushing the back through the hole after plugging the wire in. also had to mess with the aiming screws a little bit to help with fitting the frame back on on both sides, but other than that, the installation is cake, and the lights are so awesome.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

Not trying to knock on your lights, but so everyone doesn't get confused: True HID kits come with a ballast for each bulb. If the bulb has a filament in it, it is not HID. True HID is just a bulb with gas inside. As the gas heats up, it becomes less resistant, and gets brighter and brighter til it no workie anymore. The ballast regulates the current and voltage, so the light doesn't kill itself. The gas in "Xenon charged" bulbs is supposed to help them last longer from what I understand.

RE: 4th gen HID install (sealed beams too)

ohh ok. well still the eurolights are pretty darned good if you want HID looks without being able to tell that they aren't actually HID.

Who needs that much velcro?

Why would anyone need that much velcro? These guys sell it by the roll http://www.liangdianup.com/miscellaneous_1.htm and is
hook and look and velcro the same thing?

02StanGT 01-15-2009 07:21 PM

What the hell are you talking about?

When the hell was velcro even mentioned? I mean before Peabody came in here talking about a website he knows that sells velcro.

importmd 01-17-2009 06:37 PM

take a night time pic for us.

APSASM 01-21-2009 04:16 PM

might seem dumb... but can you post a pic of the lights on at night? Just curious to see what it looks like.

importmd 01-21-2009 04:28 PM

does no one read these days?^^

02StanGT 01-21-2009 07:01 PM

Yeah, I'll try and get some tonight. Been working nights lately. A few pics without the fogs are on my FQuick, but I will get some with the fogs and from inside the car.

Looks real good man. Is it possible to do the fog lights to?? Just wondering. And sorry about that importmd. Didn't go to the last page.

APSASM 01-22-2009 09:48 AM

I saw by the mod description that the figs were done. I'm one mean readin' machine. But can you get them in a different color. Like a blue or something closer to the headlight itself.

02StanGT 01-22-2009 03:01 PM

You can get them in whatever color you like. If I remember right just look up 880 HID on ebay.

APSASM 01-23-2009 01:04 PM

Cool cool... Thanks man

th3po1son 01-29-2009 04:50 PM

So I talked to you about new headlights like... last year haha... but still haven't done ****. I don't want HIDs though, they just look strange without a projector. So I think I'm gonna just get some Sylvania Cool Blues or Philips CrystalVisions and just silicone them in. Is there anything I really need to know about installing the new bulb, or is it just kinda straightforward?

02StanGT 01-30-2009 11:18 AM

It's pretty straightforward. The hardest part is the bracket that holds the headlight housings in. I have some spare housings with the bulbs removed, if interested.

4th gen HID install sealed beams too

After searching the forum and reading for a few hrs on similar issue I decided to create my own post since everything I have read is either a bit old or confusing for me. Anyhow I hope someone can help me.I have read a few members have had these issues about 2 years ago but I have a different car.I have a 09 328 and I just installed 2 HID kits one for the low beams and one for the fogs. Needless to say when I turn the car on and turn both lights on they work perfect no errors or nothing but after a while about 10 mins maybe I will get an error and the fogs will turn off, sometimes only one turns off if not both and when you attempt to turn them on and off they just flicker on and then back off. Then while riding I turn the low beams off to check if I can turn them back on and then those just flicker on and off but at most times I don’t have any problems with the low beams its just the fogs.I’ve seen how people put a harness and this seems to fix it. If so can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

You mind not spamming up our forums with your sig?

Gorn 02-01-2010 11:13 AM

I just got a pair of headlights for my 96 at autozone and they are the sealed beams but you can take the bulb out and put it back in. It looks like they use the same bulb that in the 98+ Anyone else see this?

02StanGT 02-01-2010 05:08 PM

That is correct Gorn.

luciora 04-14-2010 06:13 PM

So are HIDs like brights or just standard driving lights?

blue_thunder01 05-05-2010 11:42 AM

HID's are awesome..nice write up!!!:icon_beerchug:

This looks like a nice plug 'n play kit -- with no cutting or splicing:

defigart 07-03-2010 09:53 AM

I definately doing this when one of my bulbs needs replaced. $88 for the kit, vs, $110 for 2 of the stock style lights locally.

Love this forum all ready.

libertyforall1776 07-06-2010 01:56 AM

Looks like these guys have a quality kit at a reasonable price, and it is totally plug n' play:
http://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/DD...ast-35W-or-55W

$40 or $50 depending if you want 35 or 55 watt bulbs...

I think it is the same kit Speed Inc. sells, but cheaper and without the branding!
