Scrape the old gaskets off using ........ drum roll please....... a gasket scraper!!!
My weapon of choice is a sharp wood chisel. Slide and scrape, don't hack at it.
Then follow up with a solvent, I too use brake cleaner.

What the best product to use to clean up aluminum? My timing cover is really dirty so I want to clean it
