Most likely you are going to need an adapter plate, unless somebody makes a bellhousing for the T56 that has teh V6 bolt pattern. The clutch might be tricky too, as far as finding the right one. I don't know how big the clutch for the T56 on the V8s is relative to the clutch on the V6 T5.
well, i thought maybe the t56 would fit right on, cuz, my friend has a 95 z28 5 speed. he said it wasnt a factory option, he ordered it specially(he's owned it since 94) and he has the t-5 in it... so i thought if a t-5 cant bolt onto a Z, then the t56 should be able to bolt onto a 3.8. thansk for the help. it dont look like it would lol.(this is for another firned of mine's car)
85 isnt that fast for north way round here lol. and my friend is doing same thing i wanted to do, stroked, and procharged 3.8.. i told him he mite wanna look at a 6 spd tranny. so i figured i'd ask for him.
The T5 on a V8 isn't much of a stretch, I believe that they used T5's in third gen F-bodies (IIRC), so having a bellhousing with the V8 bolt pattern is no surprise. I'd be more surprised if they had a bellhousing for the T56 to attach to the V6.
6th gear being too tall in the T56 could be fixed by isntalling a shorter rear-end gear, which would give you pretty nice acceleration through the rest of the gears, and then a really tall 6th to bring the revs back down on the highway, so I can see there being some benefit, not to mention that the T56 is supposed to be a monstrously strong trannie.
2200 RPM at 80? That's seems like tall gearing for a 6er, I turn over about 2600 or so at 75-80 mark.
3500 in 5th for 75-ish is definitely short geared from stock, my Cavalier ran 3k at 80. I bet your car pulls like mad with gears that short!

i dont have it any more, but yea it did, i redlined in 5th at bout 95/100, i could be thru 1st 2nd and 3rd, into fourth in about 8 seconds. 1st redlined about 19-ish. i could spin em(with 10.5 inch wide tires) in 1st and 2nd.
thats what i was thinking about with like 3.73, maybe 4.10 gears in rar with a t-56, then tlike u said the fact they can handle alot more torque.
i was told by my friend with the Z with a t-5 that a 5spd is s'pose to be better for dragging than a 6spd.
i still wanna do my supercharged stroker 3800 project. lot of mula tho, and need a new camaro(have ION atm.)
