Default Swap Engine

I have a 3.4l, if i find a 3.8l engine in junk yard or online (ebay = 1k), would it be worth it to swap it in?
Also if i go that route, would a catback system for a 3.4l fit on a 3.8l?
Thanks.

If you would swap, go for the LS1. If not, then just upgrade it.

if youre on a budget,ls1 wont fit the bill(literally), if youre after power go after an lt1.You can get one with the computer and wiring harness for 1k, ive seen some even come with the trans for around 1500.No matter what engine you go with the exhaust will work, except the exhaust manifolds of course. In my opinion it would be a waste of money to go from a 3.4 to a 3.8, although it is commonly done. You can spend just as much on a v8 swap and be going twice as fast, the choice is yours.

Thanks for the replies, as for the LT1 I would'nt be able to have, my parents wouldn't like us paying for a v8. So both the LT1 swap ad 3.8 swap would cost about the same? And around what price are we talking about when all is done? Thanks again.

Edit- for a LT1, wouldn't you need to buy a new tranny? 6spd correct?

Forgot to include, im only 17, and money is a problem for me. So in other words, i need this car as a DD and decent gas mileage, im pretty sure those V8's (LS1 / LT1) get horrible fuel econ..

Shouldn't a 3.8l and a few bolt-ons and some work done should satisfy my need-for-speed for now?

yeah a 3.8 will work fine for your need and budget. An LS1 swap starts out at 5,000 and can cost near 10,000 when completed. If your car is an auto you can use that transmission with the LT1.The 3.8 swap should be between 1000 and 1500.

Crack, Ali is giving good advice. I would just build up the one you have for now. This will get it out of your system, keep costs down, keep tickets down and teach you some valuable lessons when working on the car.

Save up your money and buy a V8 car when you have had your fill of the V6.

I have not heard of many people doing this. Who has done it? Just like with a V-8 swap you would need a doner car. If you buy a stand alone V-6 you would still need K-frame wiring harness complete computer system all the accessories, radiator and a transmission.

V-6 tranny will not work with any V8 and 3.4 tranny will not work with a 3.8

cbr600rx7, I am curious how much do you think it would cost replace a complete driveline, fuel system, computer system (complete computer since its a different system) and the front clip of the car and have the paint matched?

Most body shops charge 4K just for the for the clip replacment. 10,000 might be a little high if you do not plan on rebuilding the motor and trans but only a little. You freshen up the motor and trans and do a nice paint job on the new clip you would have a tuff time being under 10K. If you had a low mileage donner car the right color then its all labor and wear items. Chance the paint would match are pretty slim.

Thats what i was kind of thinking. 3-5K for the front clip and 2-4K labor. I see the cost being some wear around 7-8K . And yes it would not be worth it for that much sense you can buy a decent LS1 car for around 10K now a days.
