Default steering issues

I have a 97 camaro rs and while driving at 55+ it is like the steering is loose and the car some what jumps around at times. I hope I am explaining this right. What could this be and are there sever consinquences if it fails altogether. (Like the front wheel coming off) the steering wheel don't really viberate and I don't think it has much play in it but i will check tomorrow when I go to work. Oh and I did jack the car up (under the A arms, I think that is what they are called) and wiggled the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and there was some movement but not much and then i did it at 12 and 6 and there was no movement. thx for the help.

Did you try both wheels? At 3 and 9 o'clock is a wheel bearing, bushing, or tie rod ends. Did you check the steering shaft and see if it moves? Check your inner tie rods, and look for leaks around the boot. How's your power steering fluid level?

Could also be the rack going. Look for leaks around the rod ends.

Anything going bad on the front end can have serious consequences. I suggest you spend a few $$ and have a good front end/alignment shop check your car out. It is difficult to diagnose your problem from a distance, and difficult for you to fix it if you haven't got the experience, or the necessary tools.

yes there are evidence of leaks around the boots, I had to add power steering fluid just a few weeks ago. I will do just that and have it looked at by a pro, so that way I don't just start buying stuff and not solving the problem.

Allright guys I took my car to the shop yesterday, and the reasoning behind my main issue is the Lower Control Arm Bushings. That caused the car to jump around while driving it. The reason behind the leaking Power Steering fluid is the Rack and Pinion. The Rear Transmission seal was also bad. I went ahead and had all the work done for a total of $1,234 + Tax. Thanks again for all the help.
